Shrek Card Match

Shrek Card Match is a 2001 American computer-animated fantasy movie loosely inspired by William Steig's 1990 fairy tale picture book of the same title, marking the directorial debut of Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson. It features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow, and acts somewhat as a parody of other movies adapted from various children's fantasies, particularly animated Disney films. The story centers on an ogre named Shrek (voiced by Myers), whose swamp is invaded by fairy tale creatures exiled there by the wicked Lord Farquaad (voiced by Lithgow). To reclaim his home, Shrek strikes a bargain with Farquaad to deliver him a queen in return for the deed to his swamp. Accompanied by a talking Donkey (voiced by Murphy), Shrek locates Princess Fiona (voiced by Diaz). As they escort Fiona to Farquaad for their wedding, Shrek begins to fall in love with the princess and soon uncovers a startling secret about her. Steven Spielberg originally acquired the rights to Steig's book in 1991, prior to DreamWorks' establishment, intending to produce a traditionally animated adaptation. However, John H. Williams persuaded him to bring the project to DreamWorks in 1994, coinciding with the studio's founding, and Jeffrey Katzenberg swiftly moved the film into active development after the studio purchased the rights in 1995. Chris Farley was initially cast as the voice of the titular character, recording approximately 80%–90% of his lines. Following Farley's death in 1997 before completion, Mike Myers stepped in to voice the character, opting for a Scottish accent after his first session. The movie was also initially intended to use motion capture, but due to unsatisfactory results, the studio hired Pacific Data Images to assist Shrek in achieving its final computer-animated appearance. Shrek positioned DreamWorks Animation as a major rival to Pixar in feature film computer animation, earning $484.4 million globally against a production budget of $60 million. It was praised as an animated work appealing to adults, featuring numerous adult-oriented jokes and themes while maintaining a plot and humor simple enough for children. Shrek claimed the inaugural Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. It also garnered six nominations at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, including BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Eddie Murphy's voice performance as Donkey, and won the BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film's popularity led DreamWorks to produce three sequels—Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010), two holiday specials—Shrek the Halls (2007) and Scared Shrekless (2010), and a spin-off film—Puss in Boots (2011). A fifth installment, intended to be the series finale, was cancelled in 2009, with the fourth film announced as the conclusion. Nevertheless, the fifth film was revived in 2016, targeting a release in 2019/2020. The film's success also spawned other merchandise, including video games, a stage musical, and a comic book adaptation by Dark Horse Comics. The main title character was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May 2010.
