Turning Red Card Match

Turning Red Card Match is a 2022 American computer-animated fantasy comedy film created by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Directed by Domee Shi (marking her first feature-length direction), the script was penned by Shi and Julia Cho, with Lindsey Collins serving as producer. The voice cast includes Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong. Taking place in Toronto, Ontario, during 2002, the story centers on Meilin "Mei" Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who, owing to a family curse, turns into a large red panda whenever she displays intense feelings. Drawn from Shi's own childhood memories in Toronto, production started in 2018 following her pitch to Pixar in October 2017. It stands as the first Pixar movie directed entirely by a woman and the second to showcase an Asian protagonist, following Up (2009). Preview screenings occurred in London at Everyman Borough Yards on February 21, 2022, and in Toronto at TIFF Bell Lightbox on March 8. Its global debut happened at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on March 1, before launching on the Disney+ streaming platform on March 11, alongside a limited theatrical release. The movie opened in cinemas across most regions lacking Disney+, earning $17.1 million globally and garnering high praise from critics.
